About the BEDC

The Basic Economic Development Course, taught at Georgia Tech for over 50 years, is the first step on the professional track of an economic developer. It provides a substantial introduction to the theory and fundamentals of comprehensive economic development. The formal instruction emphasizes the benefits and challenges of working within the economic development field, and the accomplishments that can be gained through constructive actions and partnerships with local leaders.  The course revolves around ten core topics:

  • Workforce Development

  • Economic Development Finance
  • Real Estate Development and Reuse

The program is designed to serve the needs of those planning to enter the economic development field, new professionals with public and private agencies, chamber of commerce staff, public utilities personnel, local elected officials, and volunteers supporting economic development. For established professionals, it offers an opportunity to update their skills and expand their base of knowledge. All participants will enhance their network of contacts from around the country.
